１. of + 抽象名詞 = 形容詞　
　○A man of learning is not always a man of wisdom.（学者が必ずしも賢い人とは限らない）　
　●Such meaness does not becomea a man of his means.（そんなケチなことをするとは、あの金持ちにも似合わない）　 16. the 比較級・・・, the 比較級・・・のパターン
　　○The sooner, the better.（早ければ早いほど良い）

２．名詞 + of a --- は形容詞に代用される　
　○He is an oyster of a man.(彼は牡蠣のような人だ）　
　●That fool of a John has forgotten to clean my boots.（あの馬鹿者のジョンの奴が私の靴を磨くのを忘れた） 17. the + 比較級
　○I do not love him the less for his faults.　あの人には欠点があるがやはり私は好きだ。
　●I love him all the better for his faults.　あの人には欠点があるからなお私は好きだ

3. the + 単数形の普通名詞　
　○その類全体を現す The bamboo is a kind of grass.（竹は草の一種である）
　●抽象の概念を現す What is learned in the cradle is carried to the grave.（赤ん坊の時に覚えたことは死ぬまで忘れない） 18. 比較　no more ~ than と not ~ any more than　
　○He can no more swim than a hammer can (swim).彼が泳げないことは、金槌が泳げないのと同様
　●He can not swim any more than I can fly.　彼が泳げないことは、僕が飛べないのと同様

5.名詞の強調　
　○ 抽象名詞 + itself He is honesty itself.（正直とはああ言う人間を言うのだ）　
　● He is the incarnation of avarice.（あいつは欲の塊だ）　
　◎ all + 抽象名詞 I am all attention.(私は一心不乱に注意しています） 20. seldom とhardlyの使い方　
　○He seldom goes out.　（彼は滅多に外出しない）
　● It is hardly possible.　　（それはほとんどあり得べからざることだ）

6. in itself　本来は、という表現　
　○Carbonic acid (gas) is not a poison in itself. 炭酸ガスはそのものは本来毒ではない 21. too ~ to の表現　
　○You are too young to understand.　お前は若いからそんなことは分からない　
　●He is too wise not to know it. 彼はそれを知らないほど馬鹿じゃない

7. by oneself　
　○別に離れて、ひとりで　I live all by myself.（ぼくはまったくの独り住まいだ）　
　●他人の助力なしで　I can not finish it by myself. （ぼくひとりでは仕上がらない） 22. too ~ to の否定的ニュアンスを含まない特別な用法
　○He is too ready to speak.　あの男は喋りすぎる　
　●I am only too delighted to accept your kind invitation. 　大喜びでご招待に応じます

8．for oneself　
　○自分で　I like to do everything for myself.　（ぼくは何でも自分ですることが好きだ）
　●～のために He loves labor for itself.　（彼は労働そのものを愛する＝働くのが好きで働く）
23. cannot ~ too　の使い方　
　○We cannot praise him too much. = It is impossible to overpraise him.　どんなに褒めても褒め足りない

9. of oneself　of one's own accord
　○ひとりでに、自然に　I did not call him ; he woke up of himself.　（私が起こしたのではない。彼はひとりでに目を覚ましました。）
　●自分の意志で　The boy ran away from school, but returned of his own accord.（子供が学校から逃げたが、またひとりで帰って来た。） 24. one........the other　と　the one........the other　の違い　
　○We have two dogs ; one is white, and the other black.　私の家には犬が二匹いる、一つは白で、一つは黒い。　
　●We have two dogs, a white one, and a black one ; the one is larger than the other.　私の家には白いのと黒いのと犬が二匹いる。白いのは黒いのより大きい。

10. to oneself　
　○独り言を言う　He often talks to himself when he is alone.　（彼は一人で居る時に、よく独り言を言う）　
　●独占する　I have this big room all to myself.　　（私はこの大きい部屋をまったく独占している）
25. this that の使い方　this は文章の中で近いもの、thatは遠いもの　を指す　
　○Health is above wealth, for this cannot give so much happiness as that.　健康は富に勝る、これ（富）はあれ（健康）ほど幸福を与えることは出来ないからである

11. 再帰動詞　意味を強めるためにのみ用いられる
　○He did it himself.　　彼は自分自身で手を下した
26. anotherに関して　
　○To know is one thing, to practice is another. 　知ることと行うことは全く別なことである

12. the very + 名詞
　○He is the very man for you.　彼は君におあつらえ向きの人だ。 27. 同一名詞の反復を避けるために、that is (複数は those of )を用いる　
　○The tail of a fox is longer than that of a hare.　狐のしっぽは兎のしっぽより長い

13. 最上級で「どんな～でも」と訳す
　○The wisest man cannot know everything.　どんな賢い人でも何でも知ることはできない。
28. 前文の叙述部分全部を反復する代わりに用いられる that　
　○The ship was built in less than a year, and that in the midst of the war.　この船は一年もかからずにできた、しかも戦争の真っ最中に

14．the last　の使い方　「決して～しない」（～する最後の・・・だ）という表現
　○He is the last person to do such a thing.　あの人は決してそんなことをしそうな人ではない
29．what with.....and what with　what by.....and what by と言う表現　
　○What with teaching, and what with writing, my time is fully taken up.　教えることやら、書くことやらで、僕は少しも暇がない。
　●What by policy, and what by force, he always accomplishes his purpose.　政略を用いたり、暴力を用いたりして彼は必ず目的を遂げる

15．否定語 + 比較級 = 最上級
